    Wings of the City temporary art installation by Jorge Marín comes to Sacramento!

    It's time to spread your wings! The City of Sacramento and Consulate of Mexico are presenting a free outdoor temporary exhibition of nine bronze sculptures by Jorge Marín, a well-known Mexican contemporary artist. One of the pieces, titled "Wings of Mexico," consists of large wings framed where viewers can stand on a pedestal and pose for photos between the wings. The nine sculptures have traveled throughout the world for the past 25 years and most recently were located in Santa Ana. The sculptures will be located on K Street between 11th and 7th Street and on 9th and Capitol Mall. Sacramento will be home to the nine sculptures until November 2019

    Sesquicentennial Community Day

    Wednesday, May 8, 2019

    Free outdoor festivities start at 10 a.m. at the Old Sacramento State Historic Park. School groups and the general public are invited to celebrate!

    Historic re-creation of the parade that took place on May 8, 1869.

    Complimentary rides aboard the Sacramento Southern Railroad throughout the day.

    Transcontinental Railroad melodrama playing in the historic Eagle Theatre.

    Community Picnic on 1849 Scene (Front Street, between I & J Streets) featuring:

    Docents and historians will be available to tell stories of the Transcontinental Railroad.

    Live music.

    Cap off the day with an 1869 themed happy hour at participating restaurants and bars throughout Downtown and Old Sacramento Waterfront featuring railroad themed eats and drinks where it all began 150 years ago, as well as a free waterfront concert featuring Auburn Road.

    Waterfront Days – An Old Sacramento Heritage Event

           Honored Elders Day 2019

    Hosted by California State Indian Museum

    The 42nd Gathering of Honored Elders.

    It is our honor to acknowledge California’s Native American Elders via this event held each year on the park grounds of the State Indian Museum.

    We recognize, with highest regard, your perseverance in sharing, teaching, and otherwise carrying forward the traditions of your people. It is through your efforts that Native youth learn about their heritage, others learn the truthful history and experience of Native people in California, and California Indian culture remains dynamic and alive for future generations.

    This event is FREE an open to the public. Come watch the dancers, eat an Indian taco, or shop from Native vendors.Please call (916) 445-8115 for more information.

    WakamatsuFest150 is a celebration of 150 years of Japanese-American heritage, arts, and cuisine. The festival will feature Japanese and Japanese-American food, art, music, performances, demonstrations, discussions, competitions, and more. Booths will offer Asian and other foods, information, and merchandise. Entertainment will showcase traditional and modern Japanese-American culture. Docents will guide tours and tell stories about the first Japanese colonists who established their tea and silk farm on this Placerville property. Locals, farmers, historians, and naturalists will share knowledge and experience honoring the past, present, and future of Wakamatsu Farm and surrounding El Dorado County.

    During each day of the festival, visitors will celebrate with performers, docents, speakers, demonstrators, vendors, and many others who are enjoying the legacy of the Japanese American experience for the past 150 years.  Around mid-day each day, festival-goers will be treated to the world premiere live action play telling the Wakamatsu Colony story from Japan to America, 1869 to 1871.

    Generally, each festival day centers on the following topics with some overlap each day:

    Thursday, June 6 – Kids Explore Japanese Culture
    Friday, June 7 – Japanese Tea and Tea Culture
    Saturday, June 8 – THE BIG DAY* – Wakamatsu History
    Sunday, June 9 – Wakamatsu Authors and Japanese American Farmers

    Every year, the UN Refugee Agency recognizes June 20th as World Refugee Day to spotlight the millions of refugees and displaced persons across the globe. World Refugee Day honors the strength and courage of refugees and encourages public awareness and support of the refugees, people who have had to flee their home lands because of conflict or natural disaster.

    World Relief will be partnering with community leaders to bring several citywide collaborative events with opportunities to celebrate, meet our newest neighbors, and support the work of welcoming refugees and immigrants into Sacramento.  Sacramento has led the nation in welcoming refugees. As the largest resettlement location in the U.S., our city welcomed over 5,000 refugees in 2018 alone!

    Join us, the Sacramento Republic FC, the Sacramento Food Bank, community leaders, advocates, friends, and family in our month-long celebration.

    The farm will have many craft vendors joining them this year to make this truly a festival! As always, there will be lots of fun activities both related to lavender and other fun activities. 

    Cut your own lavender bouquet- How could we have a lavender festival without fresh cut lavender?  Train rides - The train has a fresh coat of paint specially selected for the lavender fields.  Duck races-  That water splashing will feel good on a hot day.  Come join us for the day.

    Can't make it for the festival?  They will be open during our harvesting and will have product for sale every weekend in June.

    Join the City of Elk Grove and the Multicultural Committee as you learn about other cultures through music, art, food, entertainment and much more at the 8th annual Elk Grove Multicultural Festival. Enjoy two stages of musical and dance entertainment, local artistry on display, cultural displays and booths, a kids craft area, car show and much more. Free admission and parking. Celebrate our diversity and travel the world without leaving Elk Grove!
